We all want that youthful glow that we had as a teenager and in our early twenties. With excessive exposure to the sun, hormonal imbalances, and stress, our skin is not as perky as it used to be. In your late twenties and early thirties you can expect to be experiencing some fine lines around the eyes, lips, across your forehead, freckles, and laugh lines. These lines can make you less self confident about your appearance as well as an up hill battle to find beauty products that won’t settle into these lines. So, what can we do to prevent these lines, diminish and fill them, and what products can we use to hide signs of aging skin?
Some might ask “Am I too young to use anti-aging skin care products?” You are never to young to start a healthy skin care routine that includes a cleanser, moisturizer, toner, and a broad spectrum sunscreen. If you are in your early twenties you don’t need to be using products that are marketed for cell turnover or collagen repair. First off, in your twenties you have perfectly fine cell turnover without needing any help from skin care products. You may be doing more harm than good by using these products too soon. You can make your skin sensitive to the sun, and be causing irritation that wouldn’t have occurred before using these products. Your best bet in anti-aging prevention in your twenties is not smoking, avoiding sun exposure for pro-longed amounts of time, and using sunblock.
Sunblock is a key factor in the anti-aging fight. You should be using a sunscreen everyday that has at least a SPF 30 or higher. If you are wearing make up, look for a product that offers skin care benefits like whitening, an SPF, primer, or a moisturizer already in the product. BB creams and CC creams are just two of the latest skin care innovations that offer all of these anti-aging benefits in one product. These products will block those UV rays as well as fill in some of those existing fine lines and wrinkles so your makeup won’t settle and crease throughout the day.
If you have just started your anti-aging regiment and have several fine lines and wrinkles that you want to light or diminish there are creams and lotions that you can buy to fight these signs of aging. A retinoid based cream may be just what you need. This ingredient has been researched for decades and has been proven to improve aging skin. Studies have shown that retinoids can provide a multitude of anti-aging benefits including smoothing fine lines, fading dark dis-colored patches, and reducing pore size. There are different strengths of retinol in skin care products. For beginners, it is recommended to first try an over the counter retinol as it has a lesser dosage. These products tend to irritate the skin less due to the retinol being slowly converted to retinoic acid, the active ingredient in prescription strength retinoid creams. When using the over the counter retinoids you will see anti-aging benefits in up to 12 weeks, while with prescription creams you will see results within 4 to 8 weeks. Patricia Farris, MD, recommends using retinoid products formulated with at least 0.1% retinol which is the most effective in over the counter skin care products. Also, look for products that are packaged in aluminum tubes so that the formula is more effective. After using over the counter retinoid for three months you are not seeing the anti-aging skin care benefits, you should consider seeing a dermatologist for a prescription strength retinoid cream.
